1st ISMeC Group – “S. Sammartano” prize

The Silvio Sammartano Prize of the International Group for the Thermodynamics of Metal Complexes for outstanding PhD students.

The 1st Silvio Sammartano Prize of the International Group for the Thermodynamics of Metal Complexes – (ISMeC Group – Sammartano Prize) will be awarded to a PhD student whose research demonstrates excellence within the core scientific themes of the ISMeC Group (www.ismecgroup.org). Candidates should preferably develop their PhD research project focusing on the thermodynamics and/or kinetics of solution complexation phenomena.

Applicants must be author of at least one original research paper published between 2023 and 2026 or accepted for publication by the application deadline (official acceptance letter will be required).

Eligible candidates must:

  • have the status of PhD student at the call deadline
  • be author of at least one publication in a peer-reviewed journal;
  • be ≤ 30 years old on December 31st, 2026.

Application procedure

Applicants must send an email to the Organizing Committee of the ISMEC2026 Congress (ismec2026(at)uniud.it, writing in the subject line: “ISMEC-Sammartano prize application <SURNAME>”) before March 27th, 2026 with the documents detailed below, attached as a single .zip file (max. 20MB).

Documents to submit

  1. A motivation letter written by the candidate explaining how her/his PhD project is in line with the scientific themes of the ISMeC Group
  2. A curriculum vitae (EU format) in .pdf: the applicant’s academic career and achievements, a description of the scientific activity highlighting the relevance to the ISMeC topics, international experience, list of articles/presentations/posters/patents, grants
  3. A recommendation letter, by the candidate supervisor, reporting the candidate accomplishments as a PhD student and the role played in the publications reported in her/his CV
  4. A copy of a valid ID.

Rewards

The winner will receive a prize package that includes full registration for ISMEC 2026, a certificate, an engraved metal plaque, and a 150 € prize. The winner will be invited to give an oral presentation on her/his PhD research work during the award ceremony.

Evaluation

Submitted applications will be evaluated by the International Scientific Committee of ISMEC 2026, considering:

  • the curriculum of the applicant: experience, academic achievements papers, prizes and conference attendance (especially ISMEC Meetings);
  • the scientific level of the PhD project, its originality and innovative character in the field of thermodynamics and/or kinetics of complexes in solution

Silvio Sammartano

Silvio Sammartano (1944-2020) was Emeritus Professor of Analytical Chemistry at the University of Messina, Italy. Having graduated in Chemistry in 1969, Professor Sammartano has held various academic positions and was awarded with several prizes for his work in the field of Analytical Chemistry. His intense research was almost entirely dedicated to Aqueous Solution Thermodynamics, with particular reference to chemical speciation and modeling studies of real systems of biological, environmental and technological interest, as well as calculation methods and software development for equilibrium analysis. He was among the founders of the Italian Group of Thermodynamics of Complexes in the ‘70s, from which the ISMeC Group originated. His attention and full dedication to the training of young researchers in the aforementioned topics contributed to the growth of new generations of solution chemists, and it is at the basis of the  Silvio Sammartano Prize of the International Group for the Thermodynamics of Metal Complexes – (ISMeC Group – Sammartano Prize).
