The International Symposium on the Thermodynamics of Metal Complexes (ISMEC 2026) is the annual congress of the International Group for the Thermodynamics of Metal Complexes (ISMeC Group – International Group for the Thermodynamics of Metal Complexes), an open group in which researchers freely meet to share ideas, promote research, best practices and culture in the field of the Thermodynamics of metal complexes.

ISMEC 2026 will be the 55th edition of a series of congresses that began in Parma in 1973 as the annual meeting of the Italian Gruppo di Termodinamica dei Complessi. It later evolved into the “Italian–Spanish Congress on the Thermodynamics of Metal Complexes,” and since 2011 has been known as the “International Symposium on the Thermodynamics of Metal Complexes,” attracting scientists from across Europe and beyond.

The scientific program will highlight the most recent advances in metal ion speciation and solution chemistry, with particular emphasis on the thermodynamics, stability, speciation and coordination of metal complexes in solution. Topics will include fundamental principles of metal–ligand interactions, equilibrium and kinetic aspects of complex formation, and the studies across diverse areas such as analytical, biological, environmental, and physical chemistry.

Main topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Complexation thermodynamics and kinetics
  • Solution equilibria and coordination chemistry
  • Complexation processes in supramolecular chemistry
  • Separations of metals from complex matrixes
  • Metal-complex interactions with biomolecules
  • Metals in diseases: transport, homeostasis and toxicity
  • Metal-based drugs in diagnosis and therapy
  • Metal speciation in the environment
  • Analytical methods and sensors based on complexation equilibria
  • Computer methods for equilibrium analysis
